Fremantle Prison is located in Fremantle about half an hour's drive south of Perth. The Fremantle Prison has a rich and varied past. As a place of incarceration for almost 150 years its inmates included British convicts, local prisoners, military prisoners, enemy aliens and prisoners of war.
Built by convicts in the 1850s, it became a colonial prison in the 1880s and its inmates extended to include women as well as men.
Its twentieth century history includes time as a military prison and after its closure as Western Australia's primary place of incarceration and a maximum security prison it is now one of the state's premier heritage sites.
Fremantle Prison have started a new tour. Now you can get down and under the prison by going on the Fremantle Prison Tunnel Tours. Step inside and be transported back in time to experience both the good and bad history. Visitors will be provided a hard hat and overalls, boots and headlamps before locking into the ladder system and descending 20 metres into the depths below.
You go by foot through sections of the labyrinth of tunnels, then board the replica convict punts to explore the submerged passageways accessible only by boat. Discover original blast holes, bores, oil lamp recesses and artefacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labour for prisoners. Dodge tree roots and find the plaque as you journey through this underground maze of tunnels on your extreme heritage adventure.
