The Shoalwater Islands are located less than an hour's drive from Perth.
Penguin and Seal Island Cruises are the only company that operates a ferry service from the mainland to Penguin Island, as well as full day cruises of the islands. There are four tours available, including a two hour Adventure Snorkel Cruise, which takes you around Bird and Seal Islands before reaching Penguin Island.
Due to national park laws, no one's allowed to go ashore on Bird and Seal Islands, but the real action is in the water anyway. During the cruise you can snorkel around Bird Island and through an underwater cave. The boat also heads to Seal Island, where you can get up close to a colony of sea lions as they laze around in the sun.
The cruise finishes up at Penguin Island, the largest of all the Shoalwater Islands. This island is truly a unique place, home to a diverse array of wildlife and spectacular coastal scenery.
One of the island's most popular attractions is the Discovery Centre, where you'll see little penguins up close in an environment similar to their natural habitat. You'll learn about the penguins through feedings, commentaries and displays.
The penguins are fed regularly throughout the day, and the glass walls to the pool provide an unrestricted underwater view. Feeding times are 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Guided tours around the island are also occasionally offered.
It's a good idea to buy food before you start your cruise, because there are no shops on Penguin Island. There is a kiosk next to the Penguin and Seal Island Cruises booking office, where you can purchase a Penguin Island Pack consisting of a roll or sandwich, a piece of fruit and drink.
The facts
Adventure Snorkel Cruise costs $36 for adults and $26 for kids. A shuttle service operates between Mersey Point and Penguin Island for a fraction of the price.
