Located 696 km north of Brisbane, 55 km north east of Rockhampton and 15 km east of Rosslyn Bay, Great Keppel Island is a 1454 hectare tropical island edged by 17 sandy beaches. It is the largest in the 14 islands known as the Keppel group.

The waters around the island are safe and there is 18 km of beach with coral around the headlands. The island's crystal clear tropical waters are teaming with brilliantly coloured fish, other marine life and corals. The best snorkelling spots are Shelving Beach, Monkey Point and Clam Bay, all within easy walking distance.

The traditional concept of Great Keppel Island has become a thing of the past. Mid April 2005 sees Great Keppel changing from the place to 'get wrecked' aimed at 18-35s to a Mercure Resort aimed more at families, couples and mature age travellers.

Great Keppel Island has undergone a major refurbishment, including the creation of a Kid's Club, a new conference centre and refurbishment of all rooms and public areas. The change in focus comes as a result of a growing trend in demand for family friendly island resorts and coincides with the youth market seeking more mainstream backpacker locations in Australia and overseas.

The 181 room resort hotel has 17 beautiful beaches, four swimming pools, two spas, a wide range of restaurants, bars and entertainment facilities and a kids club called 'Geckos'. Guests have a choice of 40 sporting and leisure activities free of charge, making it ideal for families and couples seeking a taste of soft-adventure on their holiday. Some of these activities include beach cricket, golf tournaments, aqua-aerobics, DVD movies/music (chillout lounge), water polo, windsurfing and snorkelling.
