Magnetic Island is located in tropical North Queensland, just eight kilometres from Townsville and a 25 minute boat trip from Marineworld. It was originally discovered by Captain Cook back in 1770, who named it Magnetic Island because he mistakenly thought that the predominantly granite boulders in the area were affecting his compass.
Settlers did not come to the island until the 1870s, mainly due to its setting more then any economic value the island had to offer. By the end of that century tourist numbers gradually increased, and a guest house and hotel were built.
This small island is only 11 kilometres at its widest point, and there's approximately 40 kilometres of coastline to explore. There's more then 25 kilometres of walking tracks, which are all well signposted to prevent anyone from getting lost. The fort walks are particularly recommended. The forts were built back in 1942 just after the Japanese bombed Townsville, and were designed to protect the island.
The forts make for a stunning walk, but they're not the only points of interest. The island is the most northerly point in Australia to have large free ranging colonies of koalas. Along with plenty of other birds and native animals, the koalas can often be seen from the bushwalking tracks.
If you want to get up close to the koalas, visit the Koala Bush Sanctuary. It was originally set up as a koala hospital but has since become a great family attraction. There are 12 koalas at the sanctuary, and visitors have the chance to hold and feed them.
A great way to explore the underwater wildlife is by taking a reef dive. If you haven't already got your dive certificate, you can get it on the island at The Dive Shack. They offer an introductory dive which includes one dive and instructor for $77 per person.
Other water activities include jet skiing tours, sailing, kayaking and fishing. To finish off your stay, head over to Bluey's Range and go horse riding along the beach. The ride lasts around an hour and is yet another great way to explore Magnetic Island.
