Yep, it's that time again when we all get our peepers out and stare intently seaward for hours on end, waiting for that special moment.....when you spot a whale.
Each year at least 1200 humpbacks migrate up to 5000km from their Antarctic homes to their tropical breeding grounds in northern Australia. A large number end up in Queensland's Hervey Bay, the undisputed whale watching capital of Australia! From August to October each year 75, 000 people flock to Hervey Bay to see whales.
The Blue Dolphin is one of the only sailing boats offering whale watching tours in the Hervey Bay area. The catamaran is 10.5 metres long and 7 metres wide with ample room to move around for optimum viewing of whales (360 degrees). It is very stable and gentle with shaded viewing areas, offering eye to eye viewing. Because there are no noisy engines the boat can get as close as is allowed to the whales and their calves without frightening or disturbing them.
Also, as the vessel is a catamaran, it sits very low in the water - a fantastic vantage point to see the whales up close! A new addition to the boat for the 2006 season is a semi submerged platform on the back so whale watchers can kneel in the water and view the whales underwater with reef goggles. If you don't want to get your head wet you can use the reef viewer. No other boat offers this in Hervey Bay.
The Blue Dolphin has a limit of 24 passengers at any one time so watching conditions never get crowded and cramped! This gives a relaxed casual atmosphere and a more personal relationship with the whales and crew, and allows for a true eco-tourism experience. The Blue Dolphin also has a hydrophone on board for those wanting to eavesdrop on a few whale conversations...!
