Fraser Island is just a boat ride away from Hervey Bay in Queensland. Once you're there, a great way to explore the region is by joining the Fraser Island Company's Camping Safari for a three day tour and adventure.

There's more sand on the island than in the entire Sahara Desert, but Fraser Island is much more than the world's biggest sand bar. It has a remarkable variety of landscapes, from vast rolling dunes to dense tropical rainforests and stunning freshwater lakes. These attractions make it the perfect escape for those who love to get into the great outdoors.

The island has an extensive network of sandy 4WD driving tracks and features 200 fresh water lakes, over 40 different mammal species, as well as a variety of birds, reptiles and great beach fishing. However, it's recommended tourists don't swim in the ocean, due to the strong undertows and shark infested waters.

The surrounding ocean is also home to whales and dolphins. If you do fancy a cool down, there are plenty of fresh water lakes and streams to swim in, such as Eli Creek. Here you can walk up the boardwalk and jump in the water and let the current take you all the way back down to the ocean.

The closest Fraser Island comes to having a highway is the famous 74 mile beach. The Fraser Island Company's 4WD bus will take you for a drive on the beach as well as the off-road tracks.

Your safari also includes two nights twin share accommodation in a well-appointed tent village at Cathedral Beach, quality meals, national park fees and three days exploring Fraser Island. You can enjoy swimming, hiking, relaxing and fishing while experiencing the island's unique environment.

You may spot a few dingos in their natural environment too. Although the dingoes on Fraser have a bad reputation, it's a great experience to view them in their natural environment from the comfort of your tour bus.

Another attraction is the famous 'Meheno' ship wreck. It used to be a luxury liner, then a hospital ship, was later sold for scrap metal and now finds itself on the shores of Fraser Island.

As you head further inland it's easy to see why the Island's traditional owners call it K'gari, meaning paradise. Many people have fought to save it from loggers and sand miners, and in 1993 it was named a World Heritage listed area.
