Albany is four and a half hours' drive south of Perth. One of the town's most popular tourist attractions is Mount Romance Sandalwood Factory, and it's possibly the only place in the world where tourists can experience the ancient healing sounds of the gong, combined with the powerful essence of sandalwood.
What is the gong? Well, its part of a therapeutic experience called the Gong Bath. It's not actually a bath - you'll lie down on velvet cushions and completely relax to the smell of sandalwood essence. The room is called 'the cone' and there is a large bowl in the room which vaporises the oil for guests to inhale.
Once you've completely relaxed, the gong master takes you through a unique relaxation process. From the moment she hits the gong every cell of your body begins to vibrate and releases negative energy in a very natural and cleansing way, which is why the ritual is called a bath.
You can continue the alternative theme with a trip to Gorepani Gallery and Caf. There are two connecting galleries here, each displaying a range of artwork from fine arts to recycled handmade craftwork.
Food at Gorepani is definitely alternative. They serve all types of bush tucker food. For $7 you can buy a bowl of warrigal and sit out on their veranda, admiring the spectacular views of the Torndirrup National Park. And if you're still hungry for some bush tucker, many of the ingredients advertised in the menu are also available for sale.
This day trip to Albany is all about natural elements, and a trip to Albany's Wind Farm is a perfect way the end the day. Opened in October 2001, this wind farm is biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Many huge turbines are perched on the hillside, spinning vigorously in order to create electricity for 15 000 Albany homes with clean, green electricity. It's an impressive sight to see.
At the end of the day head down to Albany's newest luxury lodge, The Beach House at Bayside. Built in Mediterranean style, guests can stay in cosy rooms right near Middleton beach.
