Australia is certainly famous for its coastline, the miles and miles of gritty fringe, its islands and reefs, mostly unspoiled and largely developed for tourism of one sort or another. However, there is a set of islands that remain virtually unknown - though this is about to change.

The Abrolhos (officially known as Houtman Abrolhos) archipelago lies 60km off the Western Australian coast near Geraldton. There are 122 islands clustered into three main groups: the Wallabi Group, Easter Group and Pelsaert Group, which extend from north to south across 100km of ocean.

These islands are unique. The Houtman Abrolhos islands are an A class reserve, reserved for conservation, tourism and purposes associated with the fishing industry.

Many ships, and fishermen for that matter, have been wrecked along these islands. The most famous being the "Batavia" which headed down past Africa from Holland, forgot to turn left at the bottom and instead of reaching Jarkarta, ran aground in 1629 on Morning Reef in the Wallabi group.

There are also the first European buildings in Australia on West Wallabi island - two forlorn, dry wall 'forts'. The best way to truly experience the Abrolhos is from the air! Geraldton Air Services will whisk you over the islands and their amazing blue water! Once you land on this incredible playground there'll be no shortage of things to do!

The Abrolhos Islands provides pure diving pleasure. With a range of diving options to choose from in each Island group, the Abrolhos can cater for everyone from the expert diver to the snorkeller.

Tropical parrot and butterfly fish and coral trout swim beside western rock lobsters, buff bream and bald chin gropers. Coral bombies and colourful staghorn coral provide an underwater maze for a dive.

The Islands are also a nature lovers' paradise. On dry land, sea lions bask on the shores while a plethora of bird life soar above. The Abrolhos also offers awesome surf and windsurfing conditions.

With swell lines wrapping left and right around the islands, quality surf is possible in a variety of weather conditions. Geraldton's famous sea breezes and the protected waters of the Abrolhos also provide outstanding conditions for speed sailing.
