Apart from one or two streets, Captains Flat is full of hilly landscape. This contrary name for the town has been the source of an ongoing debate among residents; many calling for it to be renamed something more appropriate. Look to the horizon and you will see gorges, mountains, creek beds, valleys, peaks, knolls and creek beds where you might expect to find flat country plains.
Once known for its generous seams of gold, this town was thriving in the mid-1800s. Now its a favoured day trip from Canberra; a peaceful retreat where you can sit down at the longest bar in the southern hemisphere in the Captains Flat Hotel.
