Apart from one or two streets, Captains Flat is full of hilly landscape. This contrary name for the town has been the source of an ongoing debate among residents; many calling for it to be renamed something more appropriate. Once known for its generous seams of gold, this town was thriving in the mid-1800s. Now its a favoured day trip from Canberra; a peaceful retreat where you can sit down at the longest bar in the southern hemisphere in the Captains Flat Hotel.
