As the largest sheep and cattle sales centre in the state, Gunnedah has been known as "The Woolshed" since the 1830's.
Gunnedah also boasts an association with Dorethea MacKellar's epic poem 'My Country' and Jean Isherwood's illustrations of the poem feature prominently at the local Creative Arts Centre.
Moderate weather makes this region a welcome habitat for a healthy Koala population.
