The Orange Wine Region lies between the wine regions of Mudgee and Cowra, in the Central Tablelands. The altitude of this region makes it the highest in Australia, with vines being grown at 1100 metres above sea level. The region is located on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Mt Canobolas. Due to this feature, the volcanic soils are basalt based and very rich. The other essential of a wine-producing region is the climate. The Orange region has a cool climate and good rainfall in the October to April growing period. Also due to the altitude, there is ample snowfall in the winter months.
The Orange Wine Region is still in its early years of development. Most of the vineyards and wineries were established in the 1980's and there after. The majority of properties are located between the towns of Orange and Lucknow.
The region produces a large range of grapes but is renowned for the production of Chardonnay and Cabernet. The production of elegant fruity wines is very dominant. Other varieties include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Harvest time is late March to early May.
Orange has fabulous restaurants that produce many delectable treats including the regions excellent wines. There are many places to stay in the area, especially in April when the annual F.O.O.D week (Food of the Orange District) is on. This event sports all of the regions fantastic local produce, reeling in the crowds.Photos
