The town of Tullamore is best known for its Irish heritage and the fantastic annual Tullamore Irish Festival, held in March. The Festival features Irish dancers, entertainers and musicians, an Irish hurdle race and a whole program of Irish fun for the whole family. The small population of approximately 700 people enjoys a strong sense of community, with a real feeling of being a part of a big family.
The festival has been going since 2004 and celebrates the town's strong Irish links. The area was settled mainly by Irish families who moved into the area in the 1900’s. Today up to 80% of the community still have Irish family connections. This is obvious when you see the many farms around Tullamore named after Irish towns including Kilmarnock, Kinvara, Cadungle, Fermoy and Carlyle.
The Tullamore region's economy is agriculture-based, with sheep and cattle grazing, as well as crop production which is the basis of the Tullamore economy. The town is abuzz with activity during November as it is harvest time for the crops of wheat, barley, oats, oilseeds and winter legumes, which are all grown annually. The annual Tullamore Rural Show in August is a great way to check out the local agricultural industry.
Within the town you will find the Memorial Park on the main street with playground facilities and rest rooms. For those wishing to stay overnight, choose from bed and breakfast accommodation, a room at the hotel, or a campsite at the Showgrounds. The Tullamore Showground is equipped with toilets, showers and laundry facilities. Tullamore shopping and facilities include general stores, a newsagency, Rural Transaction Centre and library.
