Stockton is located on a peninsula, with the Hunter River bordering the south-west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The eastern side of the town is home to sand dunes and surfing beaches with several shipwrecks and swimming spots. To the west there are natural marshes where many migratory birds and other wildlife can be seen. There are a number of places suitable for recreational fishing.
Stockton has been called the first suburb in Newcastle. The peninsula adjoining the Pacific Ocean and Newcastle Harbour is approximately 19kms by road from Newcastle city centre. It was originally the CBD of Newcastle serviced by ferries, of which, the passenger ferries route is still running.
Stockton was settled in 1797. In the beginning it was an infamous hideout for pirates; but primarily through the 19th Century it was an industrial and mining base.
Although it is a suburb of Newcastle, Stockton has a country town ambience due to the isolation of the peninsula. The area has its own churches, shops, two clubhouses, a swimming pool, three pubs, buzzing Caravan Park and primary school. High school students catch the ferry or bus to go to schools in the city of Newcastle.
Stockton Beach stretches over 32km, in some areas it is 1km wide and the dunes are over 30 meters high. Each year the dunes move north by 4 meters. The beach sand ranges from hard to soft and changes daily with the winds. Four-wheel drives are permitted to drive on Stockton Beach.Photos
