Tibooburra is a town where the real Australian Outback comes to life, situated 335km north of Broken Hill.

The semi-arid landscape varies from claypans, sand dunes and gibber plains to rocky outcrops of the Grey Range; yet is home to an incredible variety of native wildlife and amazing wildflower displays, from Apr to Sept.

Tibooburra is an aboriginal word which means 'rocks' or 'heap of boulders'. Discover explorers' history and the harsh, rugged lifestyle that would have encountered them during these early times. The town is home to a fantastic selection of historic buildings.

The town's main historic buildings, built of local stone, are the courthouse, and the two pubs, The Family Hotel (1882), famous for murals and paintings by some of Australia's most renowned artists, and the Tibooburra hotel (1882).

Tibooburra Outback School of the Air is the only 'dual mode' school in Australia. Turn up in the morning and youll be able to see the school in action.
