The rugged volcanic peak that thrusts its way out of one hundred metres of opal blue sea water is known as Cabbage Tree Island. It takes its name from the crop of Cabbage Trees that cling to one side of the rocky outcrop. While visitors are not actually permitted to step foot on the protected island, the surrounding waters do make a calm and safe training location for fledgling divers.

The island is home to one of the worlds rarest birds, the Gould's petrel. The birds only visit the island for three months of the year, starting in October. It is because there are only 300 breeding pairs left that public access is denied.

The island's surrounding waters are also home to the ill fated Oakland. Eleven lives were lost in 1903 when she sank. The wreck lies in 27 metres of water north of Cabbage Tree Island and makes an interesting dive location.
