Situated 667km northeast of Sydney, Maclean is one of those remarkable towns which has an excess of attractive buildings and things to see.

In recent times the local council has promoted Maclean as 'Australia's first Scottish town' - in recognition of the large numbers of Scottish settlers amongst the early selectors. They have succeeded up to a point, as many of the street signs are now in both Gaelic and English.

However, the Maclean area’s first inhabitants were the Aborigines - possibly the Gumbaingirr or Yaygir clans. Many European observers spoke highly of their craft, skill, culture & intelligence.

Visitors can take in the panoramic views of the town, coast and bushland at Maclean Lookout. Near the lookout is Pinnacle Rock, a fascinating rock formation with a network of caves.

The Maclean Cane Harvest Festival is held annually in early spring (usually the Sep-Oct NSW school holidays) and the famous Highland Gathering at Easter.

Haggis and sporrans aside, sailing and water-skiing are the more mainstream pastimes and Maclean is close to beaches and 2 coastal National Parks.
