Cookardinia - it has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning "place of the giant kingfisher", it is probably a reference to the Kookaburra.
However, more infamous around these parts than its avian name sake is gunslinging outlaw Mad Dog Morgan, a rebel of the late 1800s. Among others he also shot a Sergeant and has remained legendary ever since. Cookardinia was the location for several of the reinactments in the film about him, aptly entitled 'Mad Dog Morgan'.
Despite the excitement of the past, these days the near abandoned town of Cookardinia clings on for dear life. Take the 24km drive east from Henty and see the old chock-and-log 'Buckaringa' woolshed, the ruins of the Squatter's Arms Inn, built in 1848 and the Memorial Hall built in 1925.
Dont expect a ghost town as Cookardinia and its surrounding area has an approximate population of 283 persons.
