Not to be mistaken with the other infamous 'rock', but continuing the fine Australian tradition of naming places after geographical features, is the town of The Rock. Situated in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, the Rock is just 40 odd km southwest of Wagga Wagga on the Olympic Highway.
Initally known as Kengal, The Rock changed its name to Hanging Rock because of the shape of its magnificent namesake. However after a massive rock fall in 1874 the east face of the then 'hanging' rock ceased to exisit and Hanging Rock became simply 'The Rock'. Despite the loss, The Rock and its nature reserve is still an interesting place to visit.
With a population of just 900 there is not a huge number of accommodation available for visitors. There is currently just one hotel available - also the local pub - in The Rock, although there is a listed eco farmstay not far away in Yerong.
