Modern day Jindabyne is one of the states best trout fishing locations, not just because the original town now lies at the bottom of Lake Jindabyne - a result from the Snowy Mountains Scheme of the 1960s - but from the decision to release rainbow trout into the Snowy River in 1894.
Thanks to its fantastic Snowy Mountains location, the town of Jindabyne well and truly comes alive during the winter months. Jindabyne is a perfect base for visitors to enjoy skiing and snowboarding at the Perisher Blue and Thredbo Ski Fields, which are only 30mins away.
However, don't be fooled into thinking Jindabyne is only good during winter. The warmer months also offer a fantastic array of activities for you to enjoy, including water-skiing, mountain biking, horse riding and fly-fishing. From a bleak wintery landscape the region literally transforms into a haven of lush valleys, blooming flowers and cascading streams. A bushwalkers paradise.
The area was explored by Strzelecki, who named nearby Mt Kosciuszko back in the early 1840s, and has remained a popular getaway for Australians ever since. There's a great range of accommodation on offer, including townhouses, holiday cottages, luxury apartments and ski lodge resorts.Situated around 6hrs southwest from Sydney, and 2.5hrs south of Canberra, Jindabyne is close enough to access from the city but remains a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
