Strathfield - hub of the inner west, the link between the beach and the burbs, the place where you stop to pick up people when you're going out to Homebush to watch football matches.
Strathfield has been called all of these things. However, it's a nice enough piece of suburban sprawl, but just like you wouldn't visit London just to see Finsbury Park, you wouldn't come to Sydney specifically for the delights of Strathfield but once you got there though, got into the vibe of the place, visited a few of the local boozers, have a take-away feed you wouldn't consider yourself too hard done by.
Worth a visit when you find your Vitamin C levels falling to scurvey-like levels, is the North Strathfield Fruit Market, 135 Concord Rd. Get there on a Saturday morning and enjoy the camaraderie as the fruiterers out-yell each other, flogging their specials to all 'n' sundry. Get yourself a bag full of Chinese gooseberries from the Greek fruit man and don’t let on to your mates they’re otherwise known as Kiwifruit.
Once your fruited up, get over to the Strathfield Lawn Tennis Club, 4a Lyons St, for a bit of hit 'n' giggle. Lawn tennis is great, indeed gay (in the former meaning of the word) fun and you and a group of pals can have a laugh on a Saturday afternoon eating fruit and playing lawn tennis.Photos
