Botany Bay is conveniently located 10 kilometres from Sydney Harbour and 34 km from the Sydney central business district. The area consists of approximately 492 hectares of the northern and southern headlands. The northern headland of Botany Bay being at La Perouse and the southern end at Kurnell. Botany bay is home to nearly 35 000 people and an historical point of interest.
Captain Cook first landed here in colonial times and initially named it ‘Stingray Bay’. The name was later changed due to the quantity of plants discovered there. Now days Botany Bay is chiefly noted for being the site of the Sydney International Airport. Two runways extend out in to the bay as well as an oil refinery and a bustling port.
The bay is a juxtaposition of nature and industry as it contains both a bird sanctuary and an industrial zone. A multitude of cargo ships bring more than a million containers a year to Port Botany. The headlands are home to Botany Bay National Park. Towra Point Nature Reserve is also found in the bay. It is in these parks that sandbanks, seagrass, wetlands and mangroves can all be found. Eastern curlews migrate here as well as terns, rare Pacific golden plovers, pied oyster catchers and occasionally penguins. Scallops, cockles, giant drift oysters, Bream, trevally, flathead, jewfish, tailor, kingfish and blue-swimmer crabs frequent the bay at various times of the year.Photos
