Located on the northern side of Botany Bay, La Perouse was named after Le Compte de Laperouse, a French explorer who arrived here in 1788.
Visit the La Perouse museum containing maps, scientific instruments and relics recovered from the French explorers. From the museum, there is a great walking trail to the Endeavour Lighthouse, offering spectacular views across the bay to the site of Captain Cook's landing place. Just off shore, explore tiny Bare Island and it's old fort - completed in 1885 to strengthen Sydney's coastal defence.
Every weekend you can watch boomerang-throwing demonstrations and join some of the Aboriginal people of the region and learn of the indigenous significance of the area. Boomerangs, shell work, shields and other artefacts are available to purchase. Experience an Aboriginal guided tour during the week, operating from Yarra Bay House.
