Distinctively Scottish sounding, the village of Culcairn dates back to the 1800s. A fact which resounds in the number of fine colonial buildings that are still intact. Take time out to wander around the tree-lined streets of this quintessential classic country town. Cut through the pretty parks and gaze at the great heritage-listed buildings just begging to be admired. Of particular note are the striking leadlight windows in the Culcairn Hotel, and the Station Masters Residence, built in 1883. Culcairn was the also the old stomping grounds of notorious bush outlaw Mad Dog Morgan who terrorised the Riverina district.
Today there are no more wild outlaws, the 1500 residents of Culcairn survive on a thriving agriculture industry that produces high yields of wheat, wool, clover seed and fat lambs. Water is fed to the town from Australia's largest open artesian domestic water supply. A 37-metre shaft distributes 800 000 litres a day from the massive basin which gives the town the title of 'Oasis of the Riverina'.
