The township of Walla Walla was established in the mid 1800s by 56 German settlers. They travelled by wagon for nearly 6 weeks, covering 1000 km in an epic search for arable land. Eventually they purchased the Walla Walla station and sub-divided it into farms. The town has since developed into a farming community that is extremely enterprising and productive.

Evidence of Lutherian history is still evident in this town of nearly 700 people. A large granite church built in 1889 and the Zion Lutheran Church built in the 1920s pay homage to this. The still operating Zion chuch is reportedly the largest Lutherian church in NSW.

Nearby, Morgan's Lookout - a granite rock that commands views of the Billabong Valley - is well worth a look. Notorious bandit Mad Dog Morgan spent three years here, hiding out along the banks of the long Billabong Creek which runs through Walla Walla. It was actually in this little town that he began his illicit activities, dying two years later in a hail of police bullets.
