Australia’s Red Centre is one of the most culturally significant regions for Aboriginal culture, with every rock and landmark stirring with the echoes of a 60,000 yr old aboriginal spiritual heritage. Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon are icons of the Outback Spirit.
Alice Springs is the main city of the Red Centre. Although it is in the outback, it isn’t lacking in any of the city comforts. Surrounded by desert and the MacDonnell ranges, Alice Springs has shopping centres, restaurants and the town showcases aboriginal culture and history.
Moving south from Alice Springs you head into the world heritage Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Uluru, or Ayers Rock as it is also known, is Australia’s most recognisable natural icon. Just west of here are the Olgas, rocks that date back more than 500 million years. Both of these areas are full of aboriginal culture and history – some of the most significant locations in Australia.
Heading North towards Darwin you will come to Tennant Creek full of gold rush history. Here you can fossick for gold, explore cattle stations and visit Devil’s Marbles – a famous landmark.Photos
