A place of contrasts, Kakadu National Park covers an area of over 20,000 square km and is known for its towering escarpments, lush rainforest, jagged peaks, stunning lookouts, calm swimming holes and roaring waterfalls.
Take in the beautiful surroundings with its delicate pink waterlilies and prehistoric crocodile at Yellow Water Billabong and serene pools fringed with Paperbarks, Pandanus and Cycads.
Kakadu National Park is a World Heritage area and offers tours to experience Aboriginal culture and 4WD adventures trekking through rainforest and creeks to waterfalls and gorges. Ubirr rock art galleries can be viewed by following an easy 1km circular walking track. A moderately steep 250 metre climb takes you to a rocky outlook with spectacular sunset views across the floodplains.
Access to Jim Jim Creek by 4WD is only available in the dry season with waters pouring 200 metres down into the gorge at full flow during the wet season to be witnessed from above. Twin falls gorge plateau walk provides spectacular views over the national park with rock pools along the way.
Jabiru town is located within Kakadu National Park offering accommodation, supermarket and an airport where many tourists access the park for tours and scenic flights. The town has the useful Bowali Visitor Centre which contains displays, maps and information on the park attractions with an Aborignal art gallery and cafe.Photos
