Monto, still a comparatively young town, has a very interesting history from the time that Trevarthan established Rawbelle Station in 1848, through the period of the large stations including Dalgangal, Mulgildie and Cania to the present day.
Situated on a plateau of gentle hills and wide panoramas, restored buildings from the 1930s and 1950s give the town a charming rural feel. The town has a historical museum highlighting the mining, dairy and timber industry of the area.
Located on an elevated plateau, Monto often receives some if the coldest overnight temperatures in Queensland. Monto is a rural town with many facilities of a modern city served up in a relaxed country atmosphere.
Today the District specialises in beef and dairy cattle - regular cattle and pig sales handle large numbers of stock. Grain crops such as sorghum, wheat, oats, barley, sunflower etc - lucerne is a major crop irrigated by water from three main creeks and Lake Cania. Both Hardwood and Soft-wood Forestries supply great quantities of timber for the local Mills and for export.
Nearby highlights include Cania Gorge National Park, Lake Cania and the Kalpowar State Forest, providing a Four Wheel Driving paradise. Nearby Mungungo features a winery offering cellar door sales and ancient fossilised coral reefs now appear as a low series of rolling hills east of Monto.
