Driving into Woodgate is an extraordinary experience. After visiting Childers, a historic Queensland town on the Bruce Highway (4 hours north of Brisbane - 2 1/2 hrs north of Noosa) in the centre of Sugar Cane countryside, there is a small sign "Woodgate" heading east towards the coast.
Drive past what could be the Tuscany of Queensland...undulating hills with wineries, farms with oranges, avocados, then the tropical fruits, bananas, paw paws, strawberries, melons, lychees, vegetables - stop at the local stalls and buy them for $1 & $2 a bag along the side of the road.
Brahmin cattle graze the lush fields which soon become banksia bushland where you need to watch out for kangaroos & emus crossing the highway. Suddenly the road curves and hits The Esplanade of Woodgate Beach.
To the east: There before you is the expanse of clear blue ocean of Hervey Bay. 20km of pristine fine sandy beach...flowers & natural bushland grow right down thru the sand dunes to the beach. Driftwood, sea shells, sea anenomes, star fish are collectables along the beach if you are lucky enough you will see a turtle. Bring a boat, fish in the ocean or take it to Fraser Island & watch the dolphins/whales or just relax fishing.
To the north: To the north lies Thedolite Creek where you can launch your boat. There are lots of 'rays', fishing, lay crab pots.
To the south: To the South lies Burrum River with doogons, wonderful fishing, picnicing, entrance to great camping sites and 4X4 wheel driving along miles of pristine river flats, beach and Nature Reserve.
To the west: To the west are hectares of the Nature Reserves and Wetland. There is a bird walk if you don't wish to go 4x4 driving, Emus with their babies can be seen in Springtime There are 60-80 species of birdlife around Woodgate. Variety of lizards, butterflies. Many of the animals are in the gardens - Kangaroos feed on the lawns, birds fed on balconies.
