South Stradbroke Island is accessible from the Gold Coast departing at Runaway Bay Marina near Southport. The island is just 200 metres from the end of the Spit in Southport, here you can access the island by private charter boat cruise, water taxi, day trips from Couran Cove or seaplane access from Paradise Waters.
The smaller of the 2 islands, South Stradbroke is 21km by 2.5km in size and separated from North Stradbroke by a channel called Jumpinpin. North and South Stradbroke Islands extend from the Gold Coast north to Brisbane’s bayside suburbs.
South Stradbroke Island has 2 resorts, a council camping ground and Couran Cove provides self-contained accommodation options.
The island is a beautiful getaway made up of sand dunes, rainforest, wetlands and beaches, easily accessible for the day or longer stays. The Island is a stunning natural retreat with 22km of open beaches and unique wetland and heathland vegetation. The flora and fauna is extensive, and the island boasts great bird watching with over 160 bird species or look for the agile wallaby and golden swamp wallaby.
Activities on the island include Aboriginal cultural performances, patrolled beach swimming along with an variety of resort facilities. These include lawn bowls, tennis, cycling, a sprint track, rock climbing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, surf fishing and relaxing pampering packages.Photos
