Queensland's Outback is a vast, rugged and splendid region, spanning an area of some 832,000 square kilometres in Western Queensland. This ancient landscape is rich in traditional and contemporary Australian heritage, fossilised history and colourful characters of the Australian bush.

Mount Isa is Queensland's largest provincial city west of the Great Dividing Range in the Northern Outback. Mount Isa's main financial base is the huge Mount Isa Mine, the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. Mount Isa is a modern oasis amid an ancient landscape of the red Selwyn Ranges and the rugged Diamantina National Park. Quilpie is the home of the boulder opal, and the largest producer of this precious stone in the world. The Southern Outback is known for its agriculture, opals, channel country of meandering rivers and fishing holes.
