Queensland's Outback is a vast, rugged and splendid region, spanning an area of some 832,000 square kilometres in Western Queensland. This ancient landscape is rich in traditional and contemporary Australian heritage, fossilised history and colourful characters of the Australian bush.

Mount Isa is Queensland's largest provincial city west of the Great Dividing Range in the Northern Outback. Mount Isa's main financial base is the huge Mount Isa Mine, the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. Mount Isa is a modern oasis amid an ancient landscape of the red Selwyn Ranges and the rugged Diamantina National Park. The Northern Queensland Outback is where you will find the famed fossil fields and other regional towns such as Cloncurry, Richmond, Julia Creek and Camooweal near the Northern Territory border.

Queensland’s Central Outback provides some stunning scenery, abundant national parks, waterholes, the Simpson Desert and a dinosaur fossil trail. The Southern Outback is a blaze of colour, wide open spaces, national parks and the rivers of Mulga and Channel Country. Charleville is the heart of Mulga Country, and is the largest town in Queensland’s Southern Outback. Charleville is also an historical centre of the region with heritage buildings and rich pastoral landmarks. Quilpie is the home of the boulder opal, and the largest producer of this precious stone in the world. The Southern Outback is known for its agriculture, opals, channel country of meandering rivers and fishing holes.
