Aramac was originally called Marathon. Its current name came from the explorer R.R. Mackenzie - initially called R.R. Mac, it gradually changed to its present name. The town was developed in the 1860's and is the oldest centre of local government in the Central West. It is located 66 km north of Barcaldine.
The Aramac Tramway operated between 1913 and 1975 and linked the town with the central railway system at Barcaldine. It was closed down on the completion of an all-weather road between the two towns and is now on display in the town.
Muttaburra is a pastoral town situated on the intersection of the Thompson and Landsborough Rivers. These rivers are usually a series of waterholes that get smaller as the river goes along. Muttaburra was the site of the famous discovery of the Muttaburrasaurus, one of Australia's largest dinosaurs, in 1963. At the time it was the most complete dinosaur skeleton found in Australia.
The fossil remains had been scattered about by the feet of cattle for years and some of the locals had taken claimed the fossils as souvenirs. Once the importance of the find was known the locals were asked to return the fossil material and most was recovered.
Visit the town of Muttaburra and experience the sense of wide open spaces, where the sky stretches undisturbed from one horizon to the other - spectacular by day, glowing with stars by night.
