West of Brisbane, at the gateway to the world renown Australian Outback, lies the town of Mitchell, at the heart of the Booringa Shire.
Mitchell is a town in transition. Once the centre of a busy rural district, famous for its grains, beef and sheep, it is rapdily becoming an important stop on the tourist route to to outback Queensland.
The place is living history. On the banks of the delightful Marona River, its wide, tree lined streets and classic colonial architecture tell of a time when Australia thrived on the hard work and commitment of its rural landowners and workforce, when our only major export was primary in nature and when towns strung out along the tracks that led deeper and deeper into the outback were significant, bustling places full of intense commercial and social activity.
And now the town of 1,200 people is once again giving visitors to the region a reason to put Mitchell on the itinerary. The Great Artesian Spa and associated health services is set to become a new landmark in the tourism rejuvenated west of Queensland.
