Murgon nestles peacefully at the foot of fertile Boat Mountain - noted for its panoramic views. The rich alluvial soil of the surrounding district provides the basis of Murgon Shire's thriving primary industries.

Murgon is the hub of a rich grain, beef and dairy area. It is proudly known as "The Beef Capital of the Burnett". Murgon beef is exported interstate and internationally. There are 5 vineyards and cellar doors within 15 kilometres of Murgon, the most notable being Clovely Estate, the largest vineyard in South East Queensland. The Murgon region also has one of the largest areas of olives planted.

Visitors can enjoy the Bjelke-Peterson Dam which provides the region with a wonderful recreation and water sport facility. Nearby gemfields entice keen fossickers with the opportunity to discover a variety of Queensland's precious and semi-precious gemstones.
