Tin Can Bay is known as a fishing and boating paradise. Known to the local Aboriginal people as Tuncanbar, the town is located 50 kilometres east of Gympie and is a large area of protected water which provides access to the Sandy Straits and Fraser Island. Secluded in the midst of picturesque Tin Can Inlet, experience a tranquil getaway to this area known for its eco-tourism surroundings. Tin Can Bay is home to close to 2,000 people and is the place to unwind and relax.
Marine and houseboat charter facilities reflect the predominance of water based activities for the area. It is also the base for a commercial fishing fleet which exports much of its catch of prawns, bugs and scallops overseas.
The town itself is built along the foreshores of the Bay and is popular with retirees seeking a relaxed coastal lifestyle. Accommodation for visitors includes caravan parks, motels and units.
Major events include the Bay to Bay Yacht Race, an annual event sailed on the Great Sandy Strait between the Australian mainland and Fraser Island.Photos
