Townsville is known as the capital of North Queensland. The city itself combines the lure of the tropics with the attractions of a major city. Townsville offers an impressive line up of attractions like the Casino, golden beaches, living coral reef aquarium, a wildlife sanctuary, museum, theatres, galleries, restaurants and an exciting annual line up of sporting, aquatic, historical and cultural events.
The Townsville region is also known as a beautiful sugar cane district with mills peppered across the landscape. To the north, Ingham and Tully are famed for white water rafting, waterfalls, national parks and golden coastline.
Ayr and Home Hill are famed not only for cane, but mangoes and historic buildings and traditions. To the west, Charters Towers and Dalrymple mark the centre of the old gold mining region that is now agricultural grazing land, with a selection of National Parks, rainforests, ancient lava caves, fishing spots and great walks.
The Townsville region flanks a spectacular length of the Great Barrier Reef and a plethora of Islands waiting to be discovered. The most notable of which include Hinchinbrook Island, Orpheus Island and Magnetic Island. Whether you prefer to explore historic goldmining towns, fields of cane, stunning waterfalls and walks through National Parks, or stick to the coast, island and reefs, the Townsville region has something to suit every holiday.Photos
