The progressive township of Malanda has a small population - only 1500 people reside in there - and is the administration hub of the Eacham Shire. The main industry of the town is dairy and it is famous for the providing the longest milk run in the world reaching south to Townsville, west to Alice Springs, north to Darwin and overseas to New Guinea and South East Asia.

Malanda is also home to the Majestic Theatre, Australia's oldest operational picture theatre, built in 1928.

Malanda, Yungaburra and Millaa Millaa are all part of the Waterfalls and Crater Lakes District. This area derives its name from Lake Barrine and Lake Eachum, two crater lakes filled with crystal clear freshwater and surrounded by lush rainforest national parklands. Many activities enhance the experience of this area, including a wildlife cruise on the Lake Barrine paddle boat, or hikes that circumnavigate the pristine rainforest around the lakes.
