Situated in Tropical North Queensland, Cairns is a popular tourist destination located approximately 1,700km north of Brisbane close to tropical rainforests and the world famous Great Barrier Reef.
The sunny climate and extensive attractions makes the area in and around Cairns the ideal holiday destination with its sandy beaches, national parks, crater lakes, reef and abundant wildlife.
Cairns city has an array of attractions including the popular esplanade with its swimming lagoon, BBQ areas, boardwalk and array of restaurants, markets and shopping arcades.
To the north of Cairns lie Trinity, Kewarra and Ellis Beaches and Palm Cove, where palm trees hang lazily over the sandy shores and to the east off the coast lie magnificent Green, Lizard and Fitzroy Islands. Port Douglas is just an hour north of the city and boasts long stretches of beaches with access to tours including Daintree River Cruises, hot air ballooning, white water rafting and eco tours.
At the World Heritage Listed Daintree National Park you can experience beautiful rainforest walks right down to pristine, sandy beaches, swim in clear rock pools and streams and take in the many species of birdlife.
Further to the north where the rainforest meets the Coral Sea, Cape Tribulation is a beautiful spot, named by Captain Cook when the Endeavour hit a reef here. Tours include cruises that go by saltwater crocodiles, bush walks along the Bloomfield Track and fishing trips.
Explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, just an hour’s boat ride away, with its wide variety of fish species, turtles, stingrays, sharks and colourful coral. There are many tours to choose from including scuba diving and snorkelling trips, reef cruises and scenic flights over the largest coral reef system in the world.Photos
