Historic Cooktown lies on the coast amid the remote wilderness far North Queensland. Renowned as the town discovered and settled by Captain Cook and his crew in 1770, it is a town rich in history surrounded by a mixture of iconic Australian rainforest and bushland.
While in Cooktown you must visit Grassy Hill Lookout, which offers spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside, beaches and the Endeavor River. From grassy Hill a walking track leads to the beautiful beach at nearby Cherry Tree Bay.
If you are lucky enough to Visit Cooktown during June, you will experience the annual endeavor Festival, where the town celebrates Captain Cook's discovery of the area with a re-enactment of the ships landing.
Beyond Cooktown stretches Cape York, the tip of Australia. A wild and sparsely populated wilderness area with much to offer to visitors. The tropical rainforest that meets the ocean is home to diverse flora and fauna, and the Great Barrier Reef is just a short boat trip off the coast.
From Cape York it is just a hop skip and a jump south to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree, port Douglas and Cairns, or north to Lakefield and Melville National Parks.Photos
