Cooktown, gateway to the wilderness, was founded in 1873 as the port for the Palmer River Goldfields. Set 327km (4hrs) north of Cairns, this remote northerly town is surrounded by some of the largest national parks in Cape York - where rainforest meets the reef.
While it may be a little hard to believe, Cooktown actually has more than 2 centuries of rich history, which started with Captain James Cook's landing in 1770 and then the 1870's gold rush.
Cooktown is mainly known for its exceptional fishing, with the Great Barrier Reef and pristine local rivers inhabited by a wide variety of fish including barramundi, mangrove jack, queenfish and black marlin.
Walking tracks in the area allow for visitors to explore areas of beach, bush and mountains. Closer to town is Grassy Hill where one can share the same view as Captain Cook. Cooks Pillar offers sensational 360 degree views.
Cooktown also features an ancient cemetery, a museum with original artefacts recovered from Captain Cook's pioneering vessel and the West Coast Hotel, a terrific pub which is well worth a look.Photos
