The historic township Innisfail and spectacular Mission Beach are found along the "Cassowary Coast" region of Tropical North Queensland. This is a diverse area comprised of dense tropical rainforest, freshwater swimming holes, pristine beaches and lush fields of bananas and sugarcane.
Innisfail is a prosperous, colourful town that is renowned for its fertile farm lands that produce some of Australia's finest sugar cane and bananas. Settled in 1872 by the survivors of the shipwrecked "Maria", Innisfail has a rich history that is apparent in its old buildings and can be viewed at the Innisfail Information and Heritage center.
Just south of Innisfail is Mission Beach, with secluded coves and pristine beaches. A popular spot for locals and tourists alike, Mission Beach is great for those who want take it easy and relax on the beach, but also has many of exciting activities such as skydiving and jet skiing for those who want a little more excitement.
As the name suggests, this region is home to the rare and elusive Cassowary, as well as a plethora of other rare tropical Australian wildlife. This area provides the perfect jumping off point to explore surrounding areas of interest such as the Tully River, which provides some of the best white-water rafting in Australia, Dunk Island and the crystal clear waters of Josephine Falls.Photos
