On the Port River, a wide inlet from Gulf St Vincent, Port Adelaide's commercial heyday was in the 1880s, which accounts for the fine buildings, ship's chandlers, warehouses and pubs.
Luckily it is unspoilt and is now preserved as museums and, no less importantly, as a heritage area and working fishing port where Australia's ultra-modern submarine fleet is being built. Even so, less than half and hour from the city and the international airport, you can often see dolphins at play and take a trip into a mangrove wilderness.
The Port Adelaide River was once earmarked for extension as a major canal to provide for the transportation of goods from the Dockyards to the City of Adelaide. Whilst the plan never eventuated, the river is still a busy thoroughfare for watercraft, and a favourite amongst anglers. Perhaps the most relaxing way to view the Port's operations and environs is by a river cruise.Photos
