Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Torrens Valley, the Birdwood area was first settled by German immigrants in 1848. Initially named Blumberg by the German settlers who farmed the area in the late 1840s, Birdwood is the major town in the eastern Adelaide Hills.
Visitors will still see many German street names as well as names reflecting the colourful goldmining history of the district such as Lucky Hit Road and Cyanide Road.
The Old Birdwood Mill is now the site of Australia's National Motor Museum. This is the most popular attraction in the town. This museum tells the history of motoring in Australia and has an excellent collection of vintage cars - more than 300 in fact. It’s set in a beautiful complex by the River Torrens. The museum hosts special events each year including the Bay to Birdwood Run, held in September on even years. This is one of the world's great historic motoring events, with a spectacular list of more than 1800 vintage vehicles, complete with passengers in period dress.
The town has a traditional Australian pub and gallery that displays work by local artists, and there are some good bushwalking and cycling trails in the area, including the Mawson Trail.Small hobby farms abound and land formerly used for pasture and vegetable growing is being taken over by vineyard and winery developments.
Birdwood is located 46 kilometres north east of Adelaide. Local industries include small farming, viticulture, forestry, fruit growing and tourism. Enjoy bushwalking, hiking, golf, horse riding, hunting, lawn bowls, local tours, plant collecting study, trail bike riding and wildlife observation.
