The township of Booborowie is located in a green valley northwest of Burra. In the late 1860s an eating-house and stables were established to service the historic Cobb and Co coaches stopping along the route from Adelaide to Burra.

Here, streets are numbered rather than named and north, south, east and west terraces enclose the township. This design was intended as the centre of a much larger service and commercial town. However, the expansion of the town did not eventuate.

The town's name comes from the local Aboriginal word for "round water hole", which is not surprising as
the town is peaceful and relaxed, nestled between smooth hills and rolling pastures.
