Another early settlement of the Clare Valley located in the north of the region. The major industries and rural products of Penwortham are vineyards, wineries, market gardens and honey.
A compatriot of Edward John Eyre, the young explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks established his family property "Hope Farm" at Penwortham in 1840. His original cottage, Green's Cottage, is administered by the Mount Horrocks Historical Society. Horrocks was to explore much of the Flinders Ranges area by camel. It was on one such exploratory expedition to northern South Australia that one of his flighty camels caused his rifle to discharge and he was accidentally shot.
Today a cairn in his honour marks the gateway into the secluded bushland of Penwortham cemetery where a number of those early settlers, including the young explorer are buried.Photos
