The Fleurieu Peninsula sweeps south from Adelaide down to Cape Jervis. Conservation parks along the coastline offers vast beaches for walking/hiking, surfing and swimming.
The area is also a focus for diving and snorkelling with a unique Aquatic Reserve established in the waters 2 km off the beach to protect a rare reef formation.
Some of its most notable inhabitants are the rare blue-devil fish and huge fans of gorgian coral. An underwater trail for snorkellers and scuba enthusiasts includes a spectacular underwater cliff, or drop off.
The region has a seriously good wine country with over 60 cellar doors & restaurants. There are 50 wineries in the McLaren Vale Wine sub-region alone. It’s easy to sample the local drop! And while you're there plan to enjoy the festivities and events at the McLaren Vale Sea and Vines Festival held in June each year.
Victor Harbor stands on Encounter Bay, and is now the largest of the south coast resorts. It's here that you'll find the Little Penguins of Granite Island, Southern Right Whales blowing into Encounter Bay, and some of South Australia's best surf at beaches like Petrel Cove, Chiton Rocks and the Dump. Granite Island can be reached via a 600 metres causeway. Take a Clydesdale-drawn tram or walk across and absorb the stunning sea views.Historic Goolwa stands at the mouth of the Murray River on Lake Alexandrina and derives its name from an Aboriginal word meaning "elbow".
Every type of water sport is available in Goolwa. Hindmarsh Island and the Coorong provide kilometres of unspoiled wetlands and at the end of the day you can enjoy award winning local wines.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is an ideal destination, located around an hours drive from Adelaide through breathtaking countryside. It is a fast-growing tourist destination offering quiet, relaxing all-year-round recreation.Photos
