The Outback begins a five-hour drive north of Adelaide at the Flinders Ranges. Beyond is a vast and rugged region that changes its complexion with the time of day and the time of year. Red soil deserts are transformed into a sea of wildflowers after rain and dry salt lakes become a breeding ground for marine birds, thousands of miles from the coast.
