One hour north of Port Pirie is the town of Port Augusta. This area is also known as the "Crossroads of Australia", due to the major highways to the Northern Territory and Western Australia converging at the town, and the roads from Adelaide, the Flinders Ranges, Alice Springs, Perth and Whyalla all intersect here.

Located at the head of the Spencer Gulf on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula, Port Augusta is a natural harbor and serves as a major seaport for the area.

In Port Augusta the Wadlata Outback Centre in Flinders Parade is a must-see to learn about the Aboriginal cultural heritage of the region, and gather other interesting information and tips on how best to explore the area.

Port Augusta's close proximity to the spectacular Flinders Ranges and Pichi Richi Pass make it a popular starting-off point for tourists of the area, and just north of the town on the Stuart Highway is the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden.
