Settlers from Norfolk Island established this beautiful little town on the banks of the River Derwent in Tasmania in 1807. New Norfolk is situated On the A10, 20km north-west of Hobart. Early townspeople of new Norfolk planted hundreds of poplar trees, which in autumn turn bright yellow, giving the town a beautiful golden hue.

The town is the centre of the hop-growing area of Tasmania and there are several old "Oast" houses (kilns) left from the early days of hop-processing. The town has many old buildings, including one of Australia’s oldest inns, the Bush Inn, and if you are visiting New Norfolk, be sure to enjoy a moment of precious peace in our wonderful old St Matthews Church, the oldest church in Australia.

Located 11 km upstream from New Norfolk is the tiny settlement of Plenty that boasts the first rainbow and brown trout farm in Australia. The fishery has been in operation since 1864. The setting of the Salmon Ponds is quite extraordinary, looking more like a collection of backyard goldfish ponds than a commercial operation.
