30 km north of Hobart over the old sandstone bridge that spans the River Jordan is the small historic village of Pontville. In the middle of the 19th century this was a garrison town. Transported convicts were forced to build the bridge over the Jordon River. In more recent history Pontville became the site for a major army camp in World Wars I and II.

The soldiers and convicts have disappeared but the historic buildings and cottages remain, many of them are now converted and offer boutique colonial accommodation.

Walk along the riverbanks, read the headstones in the old churchyards and admire the pottery and crafts at studios while discovering southern and central Tasmania.
