The first settlers came to the pastoral farming district Longford in 1813, building the town at the junction of the Macquarie and South Esk rivers. The National Trust has declared it as an 'Historic Town' as much of its colonial flavour remains. The main streets are graced with old shops and inns that have the air of a small town in 19th C. England. Most of these old buildings have been built by convict labour. At the time farmers were provided with free convict labour and created grand reminders of their English heritage. Noteable buildings include Christ Church with its beautiful stained glass and graceful tower, there are also graves of early settlers in the churchyard. The Racecourse Hotel is worth visiting, as well as Jessen Lodge, the Queen's Arms Hotel, the Blenheim Inn, the Roman Catholic and Methodist churches. Three early free-settler estates, Woolmers, Brickendon and Panshangar, are nearby as well as antique galleries and craft shops, including one that specialises in dolls houses and miniatures.
